Although Tehran is more than 2,300 years old, the Azadi Tower has become the symbol of Iran's capital city in just a few decades. It is 45 meters high and is faced with 8000 white stone slabs from Esfahan. The tower, which is a combination of Islamic and Sassanid architecture styles, was opened in 1971. After Iran's revolution the new governments changed it name from Shahyad to Azadi to represent it as a symbol of the revolution. Azadi in Farsi means "Freedom".
